Pistol Caliber Carbines are on the rise once again. Their popularity has faded in recent years, but they are making a very strong return, in large part to AR-15s chambered in 9mm, commonly called an AR-9. Known for building AR-15s in cartridges not common in AR-15s, CMMG’s 9mm “GUARD” is an excellent rifle for those who are interested in their own Pistol Caliber Carbine.

CMMG made their first big splash with the release of their CMMG Mutant, an AR-15 chambered in 7.62x39mm and accepts AK magazines. Since then they have strove for innovation and released many rifles in uncommon calibers or with unique features. Their AR rifles in variety of calibers have given them a lot of experience, resulting in them being quite good at what they do.

Radial Delayed Blowback

One of the things that sets the CMMG GUARD apart from other AR-9s is the radial delayed blowback system. Most other pistol caliber carbines use a standard delayed blowback, resulting in heavy bolts. The radial delayed blowback system allows for tuning the rifle with different weights, resulting in a softer shooting rifle.

For the suppressor enthusiasts, this means the CMMG GUARD is an excellent pistol caliber carbine for shooting suppressed, hearing safe with most suppressors – with full powered ammo!

Rifle, SBR, or pistol

The CMMG 9mm GUARD comes in six different configurations. For people looking for a short barrel rifle without the paperwork, there’s two pistol versions, one with a stabilizing brace and one without. If you enjoy the ATF paperwork, there is a full blown SBR available. Or, if 16 inch barrels don’t bother you, there’s two versions with different length handguards, or an improved version with an upgraded Geissele trigger.
