President Trump’s Latest Statements on the 2nd Amendment

President Donald Trump has had some flip flopping when it comes to the 2nd Amendment. While he previously supported the original Assault Weapons Ban, his recent stances are quite pro 2nd Amendment. So let’s take a look at President Trump’s recent statements and what it means for 2017 and beyond.

Shall not be infringed. Period.

Defend the Second Amendment of our Constitution. The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed upon. Period.

This is a rather definitive and forceful statement. Paired with his other statements, it means good things for repealing some of these laws that claim to be “common sense gun laws” that anti-gunners claim somehow respect the 2nd Amendment, but restrict it anyways.

Nominate a pro-gun Supreme Court Justice

Nominate United States Supreme Court justices that will abide by the rule of law and the Constitution of the United States that includes upholding the Second Amendment.

This is a huge one. Agree or disagree with Donald Trump, this was the biggest issue with Hillary making it into the White House. Creating an anti-gun Supreme Court to re-write the 2nd Amendment would be very difficult to fix.

We have at least one Supreme Court Justice retiring, and possibly two others. It is important that we keep a pro-gun Supreme Court.

Enforce existing gun laws

Enforce the laws on the books. We need to get serious about prosecuting violent criminals.

Expand and bring back programs like Project Exile and get gang members and drug dealers off the street. When we do, crime will go down and our cities and communities will be safer places to live.

Another thing that is often overlooked by anti-gunners. Many of our current laws regarding criminal activity with firearms are rarely enforced. If our current gun laws aren’t enforced, how would new gun laws punish criminals? They wouldn’t, they would only restrict law abiding citizens. America needs to enforce our existing gun laws and punish criminals who commit crimes with firearms.

Allow gun owners to defend themselves

Empower law-abiding gun owners to defend themselves. Law enforcement does a tremendous job, but they can’t be everywhere all of the time.

This is a rather vague statement, but an important one to show President Trumps intent. The 2nd Amendment isn’t about hunting. The American Revolution wasn’t fought to ensure Americans can bag a few deer. The 2nd Amendment exists to ensure Americans can defend themselves against those who wish to do them harm, be it foreign or domestic threat.

This statement also opens up the possibility of ensuring a national, shall issue Conceal Carry law, which will help some of our more restricted states. It will also allow citizens to exercise their right to bear arms in all 50 states. Although it is a long shot, maybe we can even restore Constitutional Carry to America, or at least pave the way to restore it soon. Lastly, it would be nice to establish nation wide stand your ground laws, campus carry, and related.

Fixing mental health issues

Fix our broken mental health system. All of the tragic mass murders that occurred in the past several years have something in common – there were red flags that were ignored. We can’t allow that to continue. We must expand treatment programs, and reform the laws to make it easier to take preventive action to save innocent lives. Most people with mental health problems are not violent, but just need help, and these reforms will help everyone.

Yet another major issue often overlooked by anti-gun advocates. Anti-gunners are quick to point to mass shootings and blame the firearm, but ignore the mental health issues that caused the individual to inflict mass harm.

Conceal carry on military bases

Military bases and recruiting centers – to have a strong military, we need to allow them to defend themselves

It is ludicrous that America’s armed forces are given government issues weapons and told to fight in wars overseas, but are not allowed to bear arms in their own nation.

National right to carry

National right to carry – should be legal in all 50 states

This is a huge statement. Establishing a national right to carry is very important, and this is a clear cut statement in support of it.

Fixing background checks

Background checks – we need to fix the system we have and make it work as intended. What we don’t need to do is expand a broken system.

Honestly, this statement makes me pause. It could be very good, and it could be fairly bad. Yes, there are issues with our current background check system. But it will be bad if we overcorrect and make it worse. President Trump’s “expand a broken system” statement is very encouraging.

“Assault weapon” and magazine ban

Gun and magazine bans – the government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own

This is quite possibly the most important single statement of them all. President Trump specifically calls out the ridiculousness of “assault weapon” bans and magazine size restrictions. It also opens up the opportunity to pass the Hearing Protection Act, remove short barreled rifle and shotgun restrictions, and possibly repeal the entire NFA and Hughes Amendment.

America certainly has quite the opportunity here.

We must do our part to restore gun rights

It is true that the President of the United States cannot unilaterally override existing gun control laws, he does have significant influence over the direction of our nation and has the ultimate sign off on the laws. Trump’s presidency paired with a Republican House and Senate gives Americans an excellent opportunity to restore our 2nd Amendment rights. It is very important to not rest on our laurels of defeating Hillary Clinton.

Please, please call your representatives and urge them to support pro gun laws.

Give President Trump your feedback

President Trump is soliciting feedback on what the American people want. Now is the best time to reach out to the future President of the United States and urge him to help restore the 2nd Amendment. So give President Trump your input.
