What is the Wide Transitions Drill?
The wider the transition, the greater the opportunity to save time.
This drill utilizes a wide transition to improve vision and transition speed. The 90 degree array all but forces you to push your eyes and head in front of the gun onto the next target. Leading with the eyes is critical for improving the speed and accuracy of transitions, particularly wider transitions.
When wide transitions become easy, short transitions become incredibly easy.
Drill Setup
- 2 Targets at 7 yards, one placed straight ahead, one placed 90 degrees to the side.
- Start position: Gun loaded and holstered, wrists below belt
- 8 shots required, 4 shots per string
Drill Steps
- At the beep, draw and engage the right target with two shots
- Transition to the left target and engage with two shots
- Reset for the next string
- At the beep, draw and engage the left target with two shots
- Transition to the right target and engage with two shots
Drill Modifications
- Use smaller and/or partial targets. Being able to transition precisely will speed up all target transitions.
- Don’t pull the trigger on the second target. Prep the trigger during the transition and finish the drill with the sights on target and the trigger prepped.
- To save on ammo in live fire, add a snap cap for the last shot fired.
- Add a reload, and re-engage the targets going in the opposite direction.
Drill Tips
A lot of people, particularly front sight focused shooters, will lock their eyes to their sights. Marrying the eyes to the sights reduces transition speed as it practically guarantees under travel or over travel. The key to all transitions is to look ahead of the gun since the eyes can transition faster than the gun. Snap the eyes to a point on target and the gun sights will follow the eyes.
Drill Diagnostics
If you can see the dot on the red dot sight or see the iron sights fully lined up during the transition, then you’re not leading with the eyes. You’re locking your eyes to the gun sights, which slows down transitions and tends to create under travel and over travel.
