What is the Blake Drill?
The Blake Drill is named after Blake Miguez, who is known for blazing fast shooting speed and transitions. The goal is simple – engage three targets as fast as you would engage one target. Essentially, run a Bill Drill on three targets instead of one. A solid time on the Blake Drill is sub two seconds.
The key to executing the Blake Drill is to transition between targets at the same speed of splits.
Drill Setup
- 3 Targets at 7 yards with one yard between targets
- Start position: Gun loaded and holstered,
- 6 shots required
Drill Modifications
- If you’re struggling running transitions as quickly as the splits, move the targets closer so they are touching. Then slowly move the targets further apart.
- Try a mixed target array to increase the difficulty. Have the right target a right covered partial target, middle target open, and left target a left covered partial target.
Drill Tips
The goal of the Blake Drill is to push transition speed. That means the splits need to be effectively the same as transitions. It seems like a paradox, but slow down on the splits – it makes it easier to speed up on the transitions. This ends up with a faster time in the end. Then try to push speed on splits and transitions equally.

Drill Diagnostics
The core purpose of this drill is to push transitions so they’re equal to the splits. It is difficult to accomplish that core propose in dry fire. Use a shot timer in live fire to analyze the splits and transitions to see if the transitions are improving.
